Busting Myths About Cavities: Facts You Need to Know for a Healthier Smile

satisfied woman points at her perfect smile

At Majestic Smile Studio, we understand that there’s a lot of information out there about cavities – and not all of it is accurate. As dental health professionals, it’s our duty to demystify common misconceptions and provide you with factual information. Let’s bust some of the most prevalent myths about cavities and set the record straight with facts, so you can achieve and maintain a healthier smile.

Myth 1: Sugar Is the Sole Cause of Cavities

*Fact: While sugar plays a significant role in tooth decay, it’s not the only culprit. Cavities are caused by the acid produced when bacteria in your mouth break down any carbohydrate, not just sugar. This includes foods like bread, fruits, and cereals. Consistent oral hygiene is crucial for preventing decay, no matter your diet.

Myth 2: Kids Are More Prone to Cavities Than Adults

*Fact: While it’s true that children are at high risk for cavities, advancements in pediatric dental care and fluoride use have improved kids’ dental health significantly. Nowadays, adults are equally at risk, especially with issues like medication-induced dry mouth, which reduces saliva flow and can contribute to tooth decay.

Myth 3: If Your Tooth Doesn’t Hurt, You Don’t Have a Cavity

*Fact: Not all cavities present immediate symptoms. In fact, tooth decay can develop without any pain or discomfort. Regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection and treatment of cavities before they become problematic.

Myth 4: Cavities in Baby Teeth Don’t Matter

*Fact: Cavities in baby teeth should be taken seriously. They can impact a child’s ability to eat and speak properly and pave the way for infections. Moreover, unhealthy baby teeth can affect the spacing and health of permanent teeth.

Myth 5: Once You Get a Cavity, the Tooth Is Forever Damaged

*Fact: If caught early, tooth decay can be stopped and even reversed. Enamel can repair itself by using minerals from saliva and fluoride from toothpaste or other sources. However, once the decay progresses and forms a cavity, professional dental treatment is necessary.

Myth 6: Filling Cavities Is a Painful Process

*Fact: Modern dentistry has made filling cavities a mostly pain-free process. Techniques and materials have evolved, and with options like local anesthesia, getting a cavity filled is more comfortable than ever.

Dr. Gutierrez was amazing, not only has she been my dentist, but my son as well. You feel at ease because she’s so confident in how she explains treatment that you don’t feel confused. She is gentle and kind. Great team!

The best dentist I've ever been to, this place is awesome ! As everyone knows, going to a dental office typically isn't a celebratory and pleasant event! However, my experience here changed my outlook on dentistry for the better. Nicole the office manager was very kind and set the appointment for me even though I had to be back to my office by 9 AM and I needed to have an appointment closer to 7 AM, she moved things around and accommodate me and promised I won’t be late to work. Veronica(who administered the X-rays and assisted Dr. Gutierrez) was thorough, kind, and very knowledgeable, which was a great start. Then Dr. Gutierrez came in to conduct the examination and assess what work needed to be performed. The sincerity she exhibited for my well being was admirable and her exceptional skill became immediately evident. I've been to several of the top dentists in Southern California, and this was by far the most impressive experience. Their price point was reasonable, the building was quite nice, and the level of care is top notch. In addition, the hygienist Stephanie was fantastic. She approached your cleaning with the perfect balance of gentleness and rigorousness. The photo studio for before and after pictures was very useful for me to see the huge difference. If you need a new dentist, this is the place. They've gained a lifelong patient in me! I hate going to the dentist. Not because I'm scared, but because I despise mouth and dental related pains. I don’t have high tolerance for pain, dental pain for whatever reason is 10 times more, but I did full sets of veneers and didn’t feel any pain! I highly recommend Majestic Smile Studio and Dr. Gutierrez and her team.
