Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect in the First 24 Hours

A woman in a dental chair touches her cheek while talking to a dentist in a clinic setting.

Having your wisdom teeth removed is a common procedure, but knowing what to expect afterward can make all the difference in your recovery. At Majestic Smile Studio, we understand that proper care during the first 24 hours is key to ensuring a smooth healing process. Whether you’re in Yorba Linda or the surrounding areas, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

The First Few Hours: Immediate Recovery

What Happens After Surgery

Once your procedure is complete, you’ll likely feel groggy if sedation was used. You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you during the initial hours of recovery.

  • Bleeding: Mild bleeding is normal. Bite down on gauze to help form a clot, and avoid spitting or rinsing forcefully.
  • Numbness: Expect some numbness from the local anesthesia, which may take a few hours to wear off.

Tips for Immediate Care

  • Keep your head elevated with pillows to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid touching the surgical area with your tongue or fingers.

Managing Pain and Swelling

Pain Management

As the anesthesia wears off, mild to moderate pain is expected. Take any prescribed medications or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by your dentist.

  • Ice Packs: Apply an ice pack to your cheeks in 15-minute intervals to minimize swelling and discomfort.
  • Stay Ahead of Pain: Don’t wait for the pain to escalate before taking medication.

Swelling

Swelling is common and usually peaks within 24-48 hours. This is your body’s natural response to surgery and will subside with proper care.

Eating and Drinking: What’s Safe?

Your diet will need some adjustments during the first day after surgery.

  • Stick to Soft Foods: Opt for items like applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and broths. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, but avoid using a straw as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket.

Caring for the Surgical Site

Proper aftercare is essential to prevent complications and promote healing.

  • No Brushing or Rinsing: Avoid brushing near the extraction site or rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours. This prevents disturbing the clot.
  • Avoid Smoking or Alcohol: These can delay healing and increase the risk of dry socket.

Signs to Watch For

While most recoveries are uneventful, it’s important to monitor for signs of complications:

  • Excessive Bleeding: If bleeding continues despite using gauze, contact our office.
  • Severe Pain or Swelling: This could indicate infection or dry socket.
  • Fever or Chills: These may be signs of infection and require immediate attention.

At Majestic Smile Studio, we provide detailed instructions and are always available to address your concerns during recovery.

By far THE best dentist I have ever been to! Dr. Maria Gutierrez is brilliant at what she does. Her professionalism, efficiency, and grace is amazing. Dr. Gutierrez, her dental assistant Veronica and the office manager Nicole made me feel completely comfortable and taken care of. It is very obvious that the staff there truly cares for their patients. Besides the amazing customer service, their work is PERFECT! my teeth are shining like never before and look marvelous. If you have ever had any questions about visiting this business, hesitate no longer! Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

Dr. Gutierrez was amazing, not only has she been my dentist, but my son as well. You feel at ease because she’s so confident in how she explains treatment that you don’t feel confused. She is gentle and kind. Great team!

The best dentist I've ever been to, this place is awesome ! As everyone knows, going to a dental office typically isn't a celebratory and pleasant event! However, my experience here changed my outlook on dentistry for the better. Nicole the office manager was very kind and set the appointment for me even though I had to be back to my office by 9 AM and I needed to have an appointment closer to 7 AM, she moved things around and accommodate me and promised I won’t be late to work. Veronica(who administered the X-rays and assisted Dr. Gutierrez) was thorough, kind, and very knowledgeable, which was a great start. Then Dr. Gutierrez came in to conduct the examination and assess what work needed to be performed. The sincerity she exhibited for my well being was admirable and her exceptional skill became immediately evident. I've been to several of the top dentists in Southern California, and this was by far the most impressive experience. Their price point was reasonable, the building was quite nice, and the level of care is top notch. In addition, the hygienist Stephanie was fantastic. She approached your cleaning with the perfect balance of gentleness and rigorousness. The photo studio for before and after pictures was very useful for me to see the huge difference. If you need a new dentist, this is the place. They've gained a lifelong patient in me! I hate going to the dentist. Not because I'm scared, but because I despise mouth and dental related pains. I don’t have high tolerance for pain, dental pain for whatever reason is 10 times more, but I did full sets of veneers and didn’t feel any pain! I highly recommend Majestic Smile Studio and Dr. Gutierrez and her team.
